This contraceptive is particularly valued for&nbsp;<strong>its high effectiveness and ease of administration<\/strong>. DMPA is administered as an&nbsp;<strong>intramuscular injection<\/strong>&nbsp;(150 mg\/ml) or a&nbsp;<strong>subcutaneous injection<\/strong>&nbsp;(104 mg\/0.65 ml) every three months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Its usage varies significantly between countries:\u00a0<strong>1.8% of women aged 15 to 49<\/strong>\u00a0in high-income countries use it, compared to\u00a0<strong>8.7% in low-income countries<\/strong>. Inexpensive, it is particularly widespread in countries with strong family planning policies, especially in\u00a0<strong>Southeast Asia<\/strong>, where\u00a0<strong>13% of women<\/strong>\u00a0use it, amounting to approximately\u00a0<strong>22 million users per year<\/strong>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Global Distribution of DMPA Usage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Indonesia<\/strong>: 25% of women (17 million users, the largest consumer worldwide)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Myanmar<\/strong>: 20% of women (2.5 million)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Thailand<\/strong>: 5 to 10% of women (1.5 to 2 million)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Cambodia<\/strong>: 300,000 women<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Laos<\/strong>: 200,000 women<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Philippines<\/strong>: 3.3% of women (900,000)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Malaysia<\/strong>: 1% of women (300,000)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Africa<\/strong>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Malawi: 33.6% of women (1.1 million)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ethiopia: 21% of women (4.6 million)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>South Africa: 23.4% of women (3.6 million)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Australia<\/strong>: 1% of women (2015)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>United States<\/strong>: 25.4% of women aged 15 to 44 have used DMPA at least once in their lifetime, with\u00a0<strong>2.6% annual users<\/strong>\u00a0(1.7 million women).<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Side Effects and Risks of DMPA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While DMPA is an effective and widely used contraceptive, it presents&nbsp;<strong>notable side effects<\/strong>, some of which can be severe:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Weight gain<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Menstrual irregularities<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Mood changes<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Osteoporosis<\/strong><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Increased risk of arterio-venous thrombosis<\/strong><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Risk of Meningioma Associated with DMPA<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to these well-documented side effects,\u00a0<strong>the risk of meningioma<\/strong>\u00a0has been highlighted by\u00a0<strong>several international scientific publications<\/strong>. This risk had already been observed with other progesterone-derived medications. Now, DMPA is also\u00a0<strong>under medical scrutiny<\/strong>\u00a0due to this emerging concern.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Conclusion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medroxyprogesterone acetate is a widely used contraceptive, particularly in Asia and Africa. However, its side effects, especially&nbsp;<strong>its potential link to meningioma<\/strong>, raise significant public health concerns.
