These two nerves connect the inner ear to the brain through a narrow canal located in the temporal bone (petrous bone) at the base of the skull. The tumor originates in this bony canal (<em>internal auditory canal<\/em>) and gradually grows towards the <span class=\"mc\">brainstem<\/span> \u2014 a vital structure connecting the brain to the spinal cord.  \n  <\/div>\n\n  <!-- D\u00c9VELOPPEMENT -->\n  <section id=\"developpement\" class=\"section-block\">\n    <h3>Development and Risks<\/h3>\n\n    <div class=\"types-grid\">\n      <div class=\"type-card\">\n        <h4>Growth Rate<\/h4>\n Only <strong>40% of schwannomas<\/strong> increase in size after their discovery. When they do grow, it is usually at a slow rate of <strong>1 to 2 mm per year<\/strong>, sometimes faster. A period of observation is therefore often proposed first.  \n      <\/div>\n      <div class=\"type-card\">\n        <h4>Tumor-Related Risks<\/h4>\n These tumors are not cancerous and do not spread. However, if they grow, they can compress the cerebellum, brainstem, and adjacent nerves \u2014 potentially leading to severe disorders, or even <strong>hydrocephalus<\/strong> (dilation of the cerebral ventricles). \n      <\/div>\n    <\/div>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <!-- DIAGNOSTIC -->\n  <section id=\"diagnostic\" class=\"section-block\">\n    <h3>Diagnosis<\/h3>\n    <p>As symptoms resemble those of other ear conditions, diagnosis can be challenging. It relies on several complementary examinations: <\/p>\n\n    <ol class=\"examens\">\n      <li>\n        <h4>Hearing Test (Audiometry)<\/h4>\n        <p>First examination performed. It measures how the patient perceives sounds and speech, via headphones connected to a device that records auditory function. <\/p>\n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        <h4>Auditory Evoked Potentials (AEP)<\/h4>\n        <p>Measure the conduction speed of electrical impulses along the acoustic nerve, from the inner ear to the brain. Electrodes placed on the scalp capture the brain's response to sounds. <\/p>\n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        <h4>Brain MRI<\/h4>\n        <p>The reference examination to <span class=\"mc\">confirm the diagnosis<\/span> and specify the tumor's location, size, and relationship with neighboring structures.<\/p>\n      <\/li>\n    <\/ol>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <!-- TRAITEMENTS -->\n  <section id=\"traitements\" class=\"section-block\">\n    <h3>Therapeutic options<\/h3>\n    <p>There are three main approaches. The choice is discussed during a <strong>Multidisciplinary Consultation Meeting (MCM Neuroma)<\/strong> bringing together neurosurgeons, ENT surgeons, hearing and vertigo specialists, radiation oncologists, and radiologists. <\/p>\n\n    <ul class=\"traitements-list\">\n      <li>\n        <strong>Observation<\/strong>\n Preferred for small tumors. No side effects, but requires regular MRI follow-up to ensure stability. Active treatment is recommended if the tumor grows or if symptoms become bothersome.  \n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        <strong>Surgery<\/strong>\n Reserved for large tumors or when radiotherapy is not feasible. A delicate procedure due to the proximity of the <strong>facial nerve<\/strong>. Our team's philosophy is to <strong>preserve facial nerve function<\/strong>, even if it means leaving a tumor residue (in 30% to 40% of cases). If this residue progresses, complementary radiosurgery is proposed.   \n      <\/li>\n      <li>\n        <strong>Radiosurgery<\/strong>\n The reference treatment for small and medium-sized tumors. Delivers a high dose of radiation in 1 to 3 fractions, with very high ballistic precision. It does not remove the tumor but stops its progression in the majority of cases. In approximately 5% of cases, the tumor continues to grow despite treatment. In over 30% of cases, transient <em>pseudo-progression<\/em> is observed before stabilization or regression.    \n      <\/li>\n    <\/ul>\n  <\/section>\n\n  <!-- ZAP-X -->\n  <section id=\"zapx\" class=\"section-block\">\n    <h3>ZAP-X \u2014 Advanced Radiosurgery<\/h3>\n    <p>Our department is equipped with the <strong>ZAP-X<\/strong>, a latest-generation radiosurgery device that allows for the treatment of vestibular schwannomas with optimal precision and safety. The reason why this genetic material is damaged is unknown. Every year, one acoustic neuroma is diagnosed for every 100,000 inhabitants. They can occur at any age, but are most often identified between the ages of 40 and 60.<\/p><\/div><div class=\"tab-pane   show \" role=\"tabpanel\" id=\"pix-tab-626f4666-49fe413\" data-bold=\"font-weight-bold\" data-italic=\"\" data-secondary=\"secondary-font\" data-id=\"626f4666-49fe413\" data-icon=\"\" data-title=\"What are the symptoms?\" aria-labelledby=\"pix-tab-626f4666-49fe413\"><p><strong>The most common symptom is hearing loss.<\/strong>  Some people may lose their hearing completely, and sometimes suddenly, but most simply notice a gradual deterioration over time.<\/p><p>Some patients may hear noises or whistling in the ear, known as tinnitus.
