The Department of Neurosurgery led by Prof. Sébastien Froelich at Lariboisière is internationally recognized as a leader in the management of skull base disorders.
As of December 1st, 2024, Dr. Bertrand Baussart, a national reference in pituitary surgery, joins the Department of Neurosurgery at Lariboisière Hospital. Trained within one of the most prestigious French schools dedicated to pituitary surgery—following in the lineage of masters such as Gérard Guiot, Patrick Derome, André Visot, and Stepan Gaillard—he is part of a tradition of excellence in which expertise is passed down from generation to generation. This high-level training has given him widely recognized expertise in the management of rare pituitary disorders, including Cushing’s disease, acromegaly, and prolactinomas.
Dr. Baussart’s arrival takes place in a particularly favorable context: Lariboisière Hospital now hosts one of the leading active European care pathways dedicated to patients with pituitary disorders, with more than 3,500 patients operated on using an endoscopic approach.
The neurosurgical activity of the center is developed in close interaction with the Department of Endocrinology led by Prof. Jean-François Gautier and Dr. Marie Laloi. The team is strongly involved in Multidisciplinary Tumor Board Meetings (MDT) across the Île-de-France region, coordinated by leading endocrinology departments (Cochin, Kremlin-Bicêtre, Pitié-Salpêtrière, Saint-Antoine, Ambroise-Paré, Saint-Joseph). It is also consulted at the national level through the monthly MDTs dedicated to “Aggressive Pituitary Tumors” (HypoCARE) and “Craniopharyngiomas” (CranioCARE), coordinated by Lyon University Hospital, confirming its central role in organizing the care pathway for patients with complex pituitary tumors.
At the same time, as of November 1st, 2024, the department also welcomes Dr. Chiara Villa, an internationally renowned neuropathologist, who joins the Department of Pathology and Cytology headed by Prof. Homa Adle-Biassette. Dr. Villa is a leading expert in the histological diagnosis of pituitary tumors. She actively contributes to several European working groups (EPPG, EuroPIT) and is a co-author of the chapter dedicated to the classification of neuroendocrine tumors in the World Health Organization (WHO) Classification (2022). Her exceptional expertise is supported by high-level scientific output, including numerous international presentations and major publications in clinical and fundamental research in high-impact journals.
The joint arrival of Dr. Baussart and Dr. Villa represents a major strategic advance for Lariboisière Hospital, strengthening the quality of the patient care pathway, scientific excellence, and the international visibility of the center in the field of pituitary disorders.
